Có / Không

Yes and No in Vietnamese

Vietnamese has many ways to say yes and no. Tap through the polite, casual, and “not yet” answers, and hear every one.

Vietnamese has no single all-purpose “yes.” A polite yes depends on who you are talking to, and most yes-no questions are answered by repeating the key word of the question — có, phải, được, rồi — or its negative.

Ways to say YES

Vâng / Dạ / Có… Tap a word to hear it.

Vâng

Yes (polite)

Standard polite yes, especially in the North. Use it with elders, teachers, and strangers.

Why this is good practice

Echo the question, sound like a local ✅

Vietnamese answers a yes-no question by repeating its key word: có or không, được or không được, rồi or chưa. Learning the pairs together trains you to catch that word in every question.

Practise dạ and vâng out loud. A polite yes to someone older is one of the fastest ways to make a good impression.
